This is a classic but still highly effective deterrent. A bright yellow or red steering wheel lock makes your car a less appealing target. The time and effort required to remove it can be enough to make a thief move on to an easier vehicle. It’s a simple, visible barrier that sends a clear message.

Don’t Reverse Onto the Drive

It is quite common for people to reverse their vehicle onto the drive so that the front of the car is facing the street, allowing them to drive off with ease the next time they leave the house. However, this leaves your car more vulnerable. 

Parking with the rear of your car is a simple but effective deterrent to car thieves for a few different reasons. For example, when a car is facing the street, a thief can simply jump in and drive away, whereas if the car is facing away from the street, they will have to go through the extra step of reversing and manoeuvring, which takes more time and creates more noise. Thieves are always looking for a fast and quiet escape.

Parking facing the house also helps prevent specific types of theft, such as catalytic converter theft. Parking with the front of the car close to a wall or garage door makes it much more difficult for thieves to access the engine bay area, and places them nearer to the house.

Turn Your Wheels into the Kerb

It is always advisable to park with your vehicle’s wheels turned into the kerb if you park on the street, or towards a wall, boundary, or another vehicle if you have access to park on a driveway. This makes it more difficult for thieves to make a fast getaway, as they will potentially have to do some manoeuvring, increasing the chances that you will be alerted and giving you time to alert the police and note down the description of the thieves.

Strategically placed CCTV cameras covering your driveway and surrounding area, paired with motion-activated security lights, can dramatically increase the perceived risk for a criminal.
